Capuchin Bridge, Škofja Loka

The oldest bridge in Slovenia is the Capuchin Bridge (sometimes simply referred to as Stone Bridge) in Škofja Loka, which was built by the bishop Leopold in the 14th century. The legend claims that in 1381 the very same bishop rode across the bridge when the fence was not yet finished and accidentally fell into the water and drowned. When the Capuchin monks settled in Škofja Loka at the beginning of the 18th century, the bridge started being called the Capuchin Bridge. The bridge is made from cut stone and is one of the oldest monuments of its kind in Central Europe. In 1888, it was renovated and furnished with an iron railing, a statue of St. Janez Nepomuk, and the town’s coat of arms. Škofja Loka is a picturesque medieval town, which is the site of the oldest Slovene drama Škofjeloški pasijon (Škofja Loka Passion Play) every year.
