The tax laws, passed in the autumn of 2006, allow for a simplified tax system, a reduced progressivity in personal income tax and a gradual decrease in the corporate income tax rate. This has helped in improving conditions for employment of the highly qualified labour force and created opportunities for technological enterprises to excel on a global scale.

The tax system consists of three main categories of taxes: direct taxes on income, direct taxes on property and indirect taxes.

All taxes are collected by the Tax Administration of the Republic of Slovenia, except for customs duties, excise duties and value added tax on imports, which are collected by the Customs Administration of the Republic of Slovenia.
