The Triglav National Park was awarded a certificate for transboundary parks together with an Italian nature park during the EUROPARC 2009 annual conference in Stroemstad, Sweden, in September.
According to the company managing the Triglav National Park (TNP), the Triglav National Park and the Prealpi Giulie Nature Park in Italy were awarded the certificate "Transboundary Parks: Following nature's design".
The certificate has so far been received by eight transboundary park partnerships involving protected areas in eleven Eropean countries which implement cross-border cooperation in management, protection and sustainable development.
The TNP has said in a press release that the parks have been cooperating for years in various areas, such as management of wildlife, the Natura 2000 network, mountain pasturing and sustainable farming, protection of cultural heritage and environmental education.
According to EUROPARC Federation, the award comes after a rigorous verification process earlier in the summer, which included site visits by independent experts.
EUROPARC is the biggest all-European association of national and nature parks, representing 500 members in 38 countries, and also associates numerous NGOs dealing with nature protection and environment.
