Napoleon Bridge, Kobarid

Near Kobarid, the banks of river Soča are connected by the impressive one-arch, stone-made Napoleon Bridge, built in 1750. The bridge was named after the French units crossing over during Napoleonic conquest. It was blown up by the Austrians in WW1, after which the Italians built the existing bridge. During WW2, the bridge played an important role in the battle for the defense of the Kobarid Republic. In memory of these events, two memorial plaques are placed next to the bridge. From time to time, high diving events are organized, although they are more common in Kanal and Most na Soči. River Soča is one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe, not only due to its exceptional colour and numerous unique aquatic and geomorphological phenomena but also because of the unspoilt nature and serenity of the area.
