Czech team wins Science Olympiad, Slovenia third

Slovenia placed third behind the Czech Republic and Estonia at the European Union Science Olympiad (EUSO), which wrapped up in Ljubljana.

"One reason for our good finish was precision, which required calm nerves," said Tevž Lotrič, one of the three members of the Slovenian third-placed team.

Slovenian team: Gašper Košir, Tevž Lotrič and Luka Hadl.

EUSO featured 52 teams of young scientists under 16 from 25 countries. A total of six gold, 19 silver and 27 bronze medals were conferred. The competitors had assignments in biology, chemistry and physics, all related to the central theme of this year's competition - wine.

The organisers chose wine because it represents Slovenia and because it was possible to set up experiments using vine leaves, grapes and wine in all three subjects, said Andrej Godec of the Ljubljana Faculty of Chemistry, a scientific adviser to the competition.
