A World Bee Day initiative web site has been launched
Since 2014 Slovenia has been carrying out numerous activities aimed at reaching observance of a World Bee Day on May 20th at UN level. The project which was initiated by the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association has received a generous endowment in support, i.e. more and more countries and other non-governmental institutions have given strong support to it.
In order to take the initiative to a wider global audience, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food of the Republic of Slovenia, in collaboration with the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association, launched a new website dedicated to the project. On Friday, 10 March, in the margins of the ApiSlovenia fair, held in Celje, which was attended also by the President of Apimondia, International Federation of Beekeepers' Associations, Mr. Philip McCabe, the Slovenian Agricultural Minister Dejan Židan MSc. announced a launch of the project website www.worldbeeday.org . Minister Dejan Židan MSc. pointed out "This is an important milestone, which places the project in the"parallel world", but young people say that if you are not there, you are present nowhere."
Joint efforts made by our beekeepers and the state in the recent years have set up a wide-spread social movement in support of protecting the bees and nature, connecting producers and consumers on the local level and using the beekeeping know-how, experience and tradition when facing modern-day challenges. Moreover, we continue our common international path with the initiative to declare May 20 a World Bee Day at UN level. In proposing declaring a World Bee Day, the Republic of Slovenia endeavours to make the world public aware as much as possible of the importance of bees for humanity, especially in terms of eradication of hunger and malnutrition and preserving the environment and biodiversity. We are currently in the middle of the formal consideration of the matter, which is a long and complicated process. We expect to reach this summer the official support from FAO, a UN organization specialised for food and agriculture, and with it the final decision at the United Nations General Assembly until December 2017.
With the aim of providing comprehensive information on the World Bee Day initiative, and to enable interconnection, exchange of valuable and other important information and images concerning beekeeping and current beekeeping/bee related events, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food of the Republic of Slovenia (MAFF), together with the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association (SBA), launched a new website. The Website Editorial Board, composed of representatives of MAFF and SBA, tackled the tasks entrusted by reviewing the content of websites of similar project, i.e. World/International Days.

A mobile friendly website www.worldbeeday.org is currently available in Slovene and English and it offers to the visitor comprehensive information on the World Bee Day initiative.
The website is intended for the general (global) public, namely information provided is relevant information which is tailored to the target group. However, through connections additional information are available for more demanding users. It also offers an opportunity for the presentation of projects which are by its content related to the basic idea of declaring a World Bee Day, i.e. eradicating hunger at global level in the broadest sense, ensuring a sustainable use of natural resources and environmental protection and the protection of bees and other pollinators, which are of key importance for pollination of crops and indirectly for food production.
The website also offers to visitors to express their support to the World Bee Day initiative and – after the World Bee Day being officially declared – to announce beekeeping/bee related events, which will be held in their country.
