Slovenj Gradec is the most important town in Koroška. It is a major business and cultural centre and is well known for a variety of fine arts events, as well as for organising biennial exhibitions of Slovenian traditional crafts and applied arts.

The town is also proud of its Messenger of Peace status awarded by the United Nations Organisation.

In the Mežica Valley lies the well-known Ravenska železarna ironworks (Metal Ravne). At Mežica, the disused lead mine has been preserved and converted into an exceptional museum, which is a cultural attraction popular with visitors.
