Higher education institutions

Higher education institutions are universities, faculties, art academies and professional colleges. Public faculties, professional colleges and art academies can only be founded as members of public universities. Private (single) higher education institutions can be established as universities or single faculties, art academies and professional colleges.
Higher education institutions can be established by Slovenian or foreign natural or legal entities.
They can offer accredited higher education programmes when they are entered into the register of higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport.

The University of Ljubljana is among the largest universities in Europe going by the number of students and it represents a medium-sized educational institution in terms of the number of employees. The university was founded in 1919. The University is based in Ljubljana.

August 2012 - For six consecutive years, the University of Ljubljana is ranked among the first 500 or the first 3% of the world's best universities according to the ARWU ranking (Academic Ranking of World Universities) – the so called Shanghai list. The University of Ljubljana also ranks 106 in the world and 29 in Europe on the Webometrics list of universities. Both rankings also represent the best achievement among all Slovenian universities.

The University of Maribor was established in 1975. It comprises 17 faculties, 1 administrative unit-Rectorat, University library, Student Dormitories, The Residence Hall for Postgraduate Students and Visiting Professors, Sport center Leon Štukelj, TehnoCenter LtD, The Business Incubator of the University of Maribor, The Scientific Park of the University of Maribor, The Center for Interdisciplinary, Multidisciplinary Research and Studies, Uni Servis LtD.

The University of Nova Gorica aims to be an independent, research oriented and student friendly university. A predecessor of the University of Nova Gorica was the Faculty of Environmental Sciences – the first international postgraduate school in Slovenia. The Faculty was founded in 1995.

The University of Primorska strives to become a centre of excellence in knowledge formation and transmission, it aims for equal and partner cooperation in enriching academic and social sphere of the Mediterranean and beyond.

The Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI University) is an international university based in Slovenia. It represents one of the six priority areas of the Union for the Mediterranean, which were confirmed within the common declaration, adopted in Paris, on 13 July 2008.
